Maintaining Your Certification

To maintain your PMP® credentials, you will need to follow PMI®'s Continuing Certification Requirements Program. This means you must continue to demonstrate advancement in the project management field post-certification, by acquiring 60 PDUs every three years.

In December 2015, PMI updated the requirements for earning PDUs. Along with technical skills, PMP holders must now continually sharpen their business and leadership skills. The aim is to create better-rounded project managers. By doing so, maintaining your PMP certificate will make you better prepared for a more complex and competitive global marketplace.

There are now three Education categories that PDUs fall into. As long as 8 PDUs are attained from each of these, you can make up the remaining ones in any category. The optional Giving Back method offers up to 25 PDUs to help you reach the 60 PDU target.

PDUs can be attained by the following methods:

  • Education (a minimum 35 PDUs):
    • Technical Project Management
      (at least 8 PDUs)
    • Leadership
      (at least 8 PDUs)
    • Strategic and Business Management
      (at least 8 PDUs)
  • Giving Back (a maximum of 25 PDUs):
    • Volunteering
    • Creating Knowledge
    • Working as a Professional
      (no more than 8 PDUs)
